How to Update Your Residence Card Information with Japan Post Bank (Yucho Bank): Step-by-Step Guide
If you live in Japan as a foreign resident, keeping your bank records up to date is important.
When your Residence Card expires, Japanese banks may restrict access to certain services or temporarily limit account functions until your immigration status is verified. During the visa renewal process, banks often send reminders asking you to update your information.
Once you receive your new Residence Card, it’s a good idea to update your bank records as soon as possible.
In this guide, I’ll walk through the process of updating your Residence Card information for a Japan Post Bank (Yucho Bank) account using the official mobile app.
Step 1: Download the Required App
You will need the official app:
Yucho Procedure App (ゆうちょ手続きアプリ)
This app is separate from the standard Yucho Bank banking app.
Step 2: Prepare Your Documents
Before starting, make sure you have:
- Your new Residence Card
- Your Japan Post Bank cash card
- A smartphone with NFC capability
The app will require permission to access:
- NFC
- Camera
Android Users
If your phone continuously asks to add the Residence Card to your digital wallet instead of reading it through the app, check your NFC settings.
In some Android devices, setting the default wallet app to “None” may help the app read the Residence Card correctly.
Step 3: Open the App
Launch the app.
Accept the terms and conditions.
Select your preferred language (English is available if needed).
The initial setup process is similar to the one used when opening a Yucho Bank account.

Step 4: Choose the Correct Procedure
From the list of available services, select:
Customer Information Notification / Residence Period Information Update
The wording may vary slightly depending on the language selected.
Important Notice
At the time of writing, Residence Cards issued on June 14, 2026, could not be processed through the app. Check for the latest updates if your card was issued on that date.
Step 5: Recommendation Question
The app will ask whether a Yucho Bank branch recommended this procedure.
In most cases, select:
No
Step 6: Review the Procedure Overview
The app will display an explanation of the process.
Read through the instructions and continue.

Step 7: Confirm Customer Information
You will see several confirmation screens regarding:
- Personal information
- Tax residency status
- Information required for foreign residents
Read through each screen and proceed.
Step 8: Select the Update Type
Choose:
Update Residence Period Information
You will then answer several questions, including:
- Nationality: Foreign National
- Do you have a Residence Card? Yes
Review the information and continue.
Step 9: Scan Your Residence Card
The app will ask you to enter your Residence Card number.
After that, you will complete several verification steps:
- NFC scan of the Residence Card
- Photograph of the address section
- Facial recognition verification
This process is very similar to the identity verification used when opening a Yucho Bank account.
You may wish to refer to my previous article.
Step 10: Enter Residence Card Details
After successful verification, enter the information shown on your Residence Card.
Pay attention to:
- Full-width and half-width characters
- Name spelling
- Residence status information
Expiration Date
You may see both:
- Residence Period Expiration Date
- Expiry Date
In practice, these refer to the same date shown on your Residence Card.
Step 11: Complete Employment and Financial Information
The app may ask questions about:
- Employment status
- Sources of funds
- Purpose of account usage
For some employment-related questions, selecting “Prefer Not to Answer” is allowed.
Purpose of Account Usage
For ordinary personal banking, selecting:
Living Expenses
is usually the simplest option.
Source of Funds
Choose the option that best matches your situation.
Examples may include:
- Salary income
- Family support
- Rental income
- Allowance or gifts
Answer honestly based on your circumstances.
The app may also ask whether you hold assets in countries subject to economic sanctions. Make sure your answers are accurate.
Step 12: Politically Exposed Person (PEP) Declaration
The final confirmation screen asks whether you or your family members hold important positions in a foreign government or public organization.
Answer according to your actual situation.
Step 13: Submit the Application
Review all information carefully and submit the update request.
If everything is entered correctly, the update is usually reflected immediately.
The reminder notifications requesting Residence Card updates should stop, and your account information will be fully updated.
Final Thoughts
The entire process can be completed from your smartphone without visiting a branch.
As long as your Residence Card information is current and the NFC verification succeeds, updating your Yucho Bank records is straightforward and only takes a few minutes.
If you’ve recently renewed your visa or Residence Card in Japan, don’t forget this important final step.
